Joe Shaliata’s story is one of resilience, passion, and an unyielding commitment to community. Born in Tanzania and raised in Uganda and Kenya, Joe embodies the rich, vibrant spirit of East Africa. His journey from a small village in East Africa to becoming a celebrated musician and a pillar in the Twin Cities African community is nothing short of inspirational.

A Childhood Rooted in Tradition

Joe’s love affair with music began early. At just three years old, he was introduced to traditional African music in his village. Under the mentorship of Tanzania’s legendary percussionist, Mzee Morris Nyunyusa, Joe learned the drum, laying a foundation for his lifelong passion. This formative experience not only connected him to his cultural roots but also ignited a spark that would guide his career.

The Guitar: A Lifelong Companion

At ten years old, Joe’s path took a significant turn at Namilyango Junior Boys School in Uganda. Inspired by the only guitar in the school, he and another student began learning to play during recess. By the age of 14, Joe was part of a high school band, solidifying his love for music. His journey continued in the United States, where his host mother in Wisconsin encouraged his musical aspirations and gifted him his first electric guitar.
Shaliata came to the United States in 1972 as a high school exchange student. Since then, he has the privilege of witnessing the administrations of President Nixon through to President Trump, along with the many changes that have shaped his adopted country and the world at large. His band was also honored to perform at one of the official inaugural balls for President Obama on January 20, 2009.”

Challenges and Triumphs

Joe’s academic pursuits did not overshadow his passion for music. He received a scholarship to attend the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, where he successfully balanced his studies and music, graduating in just three years. Overcoming the cultural and social challenges of being an African student in a rural town, Joe’s resilience and determination became the bedrock of his success.

Building Community Through Music

After moving to Minneapolis in 1980, Joe co-founded “Sweet Taste of Africa,” the first authentic African band in the Twin Cities. The band brought together a small but growing African community, creating a sense of unity and belonging. Later, with his band “Shalita,” Joe continued this mission, hosting popular Sunday performances at Trumps Restaurant in Stillwater, Minnesota. The gatherings became a vibrant hub for African music and culture, attracting a diverse audience.

A Legacy of Service

Joe’s contributions extend far beyond music. He spent decades in public service, first with the Metropolitan Council and later with the Minnesota Department of Education and the U.S. General Services Administration. Throughout his career, he encouraged fellow Africans to pursue education and federal employment, paving the way for others to succeed. As a rostered interpreter in Swahili and Luganda, Joe has served the Minnesota courts and other institutions for over 25 years, ensuring access to justice and resources for African immigrants.

Challenges Within the Community

Reflecting on his journey, Joe notes a shift in the African community’s cohesiveness. “In the 80s, we were united, fighting for the independence of our brothers and sisters in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. Today, we are fragmented, limited by tribal affiliations,” he observes. Despite this, Joe remains committed to fostering unity and encouraging collective growth.

A Leader with Purpose

Joe’s leadership style is rooted in respect and collaboration. As a retired project manager, he emphasizes the importance of setting and achieving goals, both individually and as a team. While the sacrifices he’s made are countless, Joe’s work continues to be deeply rewarding, driven by his love for the arts and his dedication to storytelling through music.

Looking Ahead

Joe’s hybrid music, shaped by his African roots and American experiences, is a reflection of his journey. He hopes more people will listen to his music and share their honest feedback. An avid reader and lover of the arts, Joe remains a strong advocate for cultural exchange and understanding.

Supporting Voices Magazine

As a potential columnist, Joe envisions contributing to Voices Magazine by sharing stories that inspire and connect the African community. His rich experiences and unique perspective make him an invaluable resource for bridging gaps and fostering dialogue.

Joe Shaliata’s life is a testament to the power of perseverance, the beauty of cultural heritage, and the impact of giving back. Through his music, service, and leadership, he continues to inspire and uplift those around him.
